I have been thinking about this for some time now. I will use sakura from naruto as an example.
for years, I have been seeing numerous sakura fanart in comics, doujinshi or just a simple page with sakura standing there in a pose holding a kunai or fighting. some would draw as closely as the author;s. others would put their own style on sakura.
in my opinion, I find myself liking sakura drawing style in several fanart over the original art done by kishi himself. I found her to be prettier in that different style than art by kishi.
I bet you also find your character better if the author would use a certain style done by fans for that specific character.
on the other hand, we run into a problem…. consistency.
kishi can not draw sakura in one style by fans while neglecting the other characters and drawing them in his own style. she would seem out of place.
and the other problem here is that the fan who can draw sakura even better than kishi may nit draw naruto as well or other characters.
you have no idea how much fanart I see of sakura that is great but that same artist draws naruto very horribly because that art doesn't fit sakura as much as it fits naruto.
same goes for hinata, itachi, sasuke, kakashi and every other character.
so what do you think? is there a way for the author to mix other interpretations of characters into his own and make it fit without looking weird?
